I was still in shock, knowing the elf king, my grandfather, had saved my arse in that cave. He’d cracked the place into pieces and made me fly, and yet I could barely mutter a single word without stuttering or pausing. What in Elysia was wrong with me? The thought of meeting my mother’s father had unravelled me. I was now ever closer to meeting her, and that filled me with both an excitement and fear, and I didn’t know what to think. They didn’t know where she was, but someone in Panyria must have seen her leave.

And Panyria was surely our next destination.

‘Get yourself together, Eden,’ Adelia snapped once we were on the ship. ‘He’ll have questions for you, and you must know how to answer them.’ Now bathed and clearly rested, she’d tied her long hair into one long braid that fell over her shoulder, and she glared at me from the doorway of my tiny room.

It wasn’t much bigger than the cell I’d been contained in on Adelia’s ship, but I was just relieved I was no longer a prisoner here. And I didn’t know how to feel, knowing this ship belonged to a member of my family. One my mother may have once travelled on.

‘That’s not what’s … God, I don’t know what to say.’ It wasn’t the king that was on my mind, or the prince or anyone but the idea of my mother and the fact I might soon see her again for the first time in so many years. ‘My mother … ,’ my voice trailed off as I realised my heart was thumping over a thousand beats a minute.

‘I doubt she’ll be there. She has a ship in Elysia, remember? We haven’t seen either of your parents for years,’ she spoke firmly, her words eliminating the last of my hope. ‘He’s calling for me. Stay here and think about what you’re going to say.’ And with that she left my small cabin room and headed down a set of steps, into the king’s heavily guarded room.

I slipped out onto the deck and stood by the edge of the ship to overlook the calm seas as we moved closer to the island kingdom of Panyria. Staring out at the hills that stood tall around the water, and at the rising sun. We’d been sailing for a few hours by now, but not once had I seen any other face than Adelia’s or those of the crew. There were barely any other ships on the water around us, and when we did catch a glimpse of one, they would quickly draw us away from it. Afraid of being confronted by an enemy, perhaps?

I couldn’t say, but I would at least appreciate the lovely view, and the way the sun’s light reflected off those mountains. How far from Panyria were we now? Hopefully it wouldn’t be too long now before we arrived in my mother’s kingdom, the last place in this world I’d imagined travelling to.
